Decluttering your wardrobe can feel overwhelming. Clothes hold memories, hopes, intentions and versions of ourselves. If you’ve ever wondered why it’s so hard to declutter clothes, you’re not alone. Many people hit a wall when they start going through their wardrobe, but that is where I come in.

At For the Love of Tidying, my goal is to help you create calm, restful environments in your home through careful organisation and intentional decluttering.

With my 1:1 home decluttering service and my nationwide memberships, I know first-hand that you don’t need to be naturally organised to make progress. You just need a gentle, structured plan.

How to Start Decluttering Clothes When You Feel Stuck

Feeling stuck is completely normal; one of the biggest steps is figuring out where to start. The best place to start is by giving yourself grace and giving yourself a pat on the back for even recognising that you need to declutter.

One cause of a buildup of clothes is procrastination. As mentioned in my previous blog about the Procrastinator’s Guide to a Clutter Free Home, procrastination is the habit or act of putting off a task.

Why Do I Procrastinate My Decluttering?

I understand that not everyone enjoys decluttering or shares my passion for it. If you don’t enjoy organising, you tend to avoid it. With how stressful life can be, the last thing you want to do is a task you don’t enjoy.

Procrastination can be caused by many reasons, including anxiety and fear, Low energy (such as lack of sleep), a stressful environment, perfectionism, and low motivation.

But the good news is once you’ve taken the first step, which could be putting old socks in the bin or dropping us an email, you are already one step closer to improving your wellbeing. As mentioned previously, the benefits of organisation can free up your mental and emotional bandwidth and help you to be calmer in your safe space.

Don’t Have Time?

On the other hand, when you’re too busy with home, work and other responsibilities to make it a priority, it can negatively affect your mindset. This is why I have a Facebook group dedicated to busy people that provides tailored support. Not only that, but I also offer monthly masterclasses in my cluttered to calm membership and blogs tailored to your lifestyle.

Why do we hold onto clothes?

For many people, clothing is an extension of who we are and how we feel. For example, we wear soft Christmas jumpers to feel cosy and warm, and to be in the Christmas spirit.

One study found that what we wear can influence how we act, think, and feel.

There is a reason: when you look in the mirror and think you look great, it outwardly shows confidence and makes you feel good.

This can then lead to holding onto happy moments by avoiding clearing out the wardrobe.

According to Wrap, the average adult has 118 pieces of clothing in their wardrobe, with one quarter not worn in a year. We have all been guilty of keeping hold of clothes just in case, but when it comes to freeing up your wardrobe, it’s time to think about what you would wear now.

That’s where I come in, so you don’t have to do it alone: saying goodbye to clothing can be an emotional process, which is why, with my support, it can be calm and enjoyable.

How Should I Declutter?

One of the most effective tips for decluttering clothes is to ask questions that cut through guilt. Breaking it down into steps makes it a lot easier to begin, not just physically but mentally as well.

If the answer is “don’t know,” “maybe,” or “yes,” feel free to get in touch, and we can talk through your options. I have many ways to provide support to suit everyone’s lifestyle.
